Numerous opinion polls published in recent days show the Labour Party and its leader Anthony Albanese, currently in power, ahead of the coalition of main center-right parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the federal election to elect the 48th Parliament of Australia draws nearer, the first trends seem to be emerging, showing the majority party as weakened against the Coalition led by Peter Dutton. The government seems to be facing increasing unpopularity among Australian voters, with the election due to be held in the next few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recent poll for The Australian<\/a> showed a slight Coalition advantage over Labor (51% vs. 49%), in the two-party preferred stakes. This variable tipped the balance in Labor’s favor two years ago, when Scott Morrison’s Coalition won the primary vote. The latter – a feature of Australia’s parliamentary electoral system – stands this year at 31% for the incumbent government, against 38% for the alliance of Australian Liberal parties, according to the same poll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important marker: some 53% of the 1,244 polled nationwide believe that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s party does not deserve re-election, while 34% are satisfied with the idea of giving him another three-year mandate. However, 45% believe that Albanese would make a better PM, against 40% for Peter Dutton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another YouGov model<\/a> also projects a Coalition victory with 73 seats won in Parliament, allowing Dutton to form his government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Leader of the Opposition has considerably softened his image since becoming leader of the Liberal Party in 2022, but issues of crime and border security remain his main focus. The 54-year-old politician probably sees this as a challenge to the law-and-order policy of Anthony Albanese’s government, which voters regard as one of the most lax in this area in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent polls, however, show that the cost of living is the concern most widely expressed by voters. But Mr. Dutton has pledged not to support electricity subsidies for Australian families, claiming they would contribute to inflation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
