Here&#8217;s how it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if it doesn&#8217;t directly affect France, this new rule could well apply to you. <a href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/thousands-to-be-impacted-by-major-australian-licence-change--c-18535225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">As of Wednesday,<\/a> the vast majority of Australian states will see &#8220;Experienced Driver Recognition&#8221; (EDR) permanently withdrawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This scheme allowed foreign citizens from certain countries not to retake the driving test after moving to Australia if they had already passed the test in their home country. As a result, permanent residents from several countries have been informed that they will no longer be able to use their foreign driving licenses to obtain the equivalent Australian license, <a href=\"https:\/\/austroads.gov.au\/latest-news\/reminder-new-rules-for-converting-overseas-car-and-motorcycle-licences-to-australian-licences-starting-30-april-2025#:~:text=After%2030%20April%202025%20(31,training%20and%20testing%20before%20being\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">news announced by Austroads <\/a>that may prevent them from using Austroads with their cars or motorcycles as of today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>The scheme was put in place over 20 years ago and licence training and testing have significantly changed over that period,<\/em>\u201d Austroads said. \u201c<em>The new scheme has been revised to reflect the changes in Australia\u2019s car and motorcycle licensing systems, which were designed to improve road safety.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EDR was phased out from Wednesday in all Australian states and territories, with the exception of New South Wales and Western Australia, where it will end on October 31, and Queensland, where it will cease in mid-2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that this does not apply to every country in the world. Only international drivers from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Hong Kong, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Republic of Cyprus, the Republic of Korea (South Korea), the Republic of Serbia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa and Taiwan will now have to take Australian driving tests to obtain a valid license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please note that the phasing out of the RDE does not affect the Recognition Status scheme for drivers in other countries, including the USA and the UK. The changes also do not apply to temporary visitors to Australia, who will still be able to drive with a valid foreign license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>After April 30, 2025, people who wish to apply for an Australian licence and who hold a licence issued by a country that does not hold a Recognition Status will likely need to complete additional training and testing before being granted an Australian licence,<\/em>\u201d Austroads said. \u201c<em>If you are 25 years of age or older and miss the deadline for exchanging your licence issued by a country or jurisdiction on the Experienced Driver Recognition list, it is likely that you will have to undertake further training and testing before you can be issued with an Australian licence.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/news\/drivers-stunned-as-kangaroo-causes-collision-on-us-highway-c-18534789\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since Wednesday, a new amendment impacting Australia\u2019s road rules has come into force, threatening thousands of permanent residents with the loss of their foreign driving licenses across the country.
