It is a story that fills the Australian community with pride. Nicole Savage, originally from Brisbane, has just been appointed Ballet Mistress of the Moulin Rouge in Paris, succeeding the legendary Janet Pharaoh following her passing. A historic appointment for this former dancer at the famous cabaret, where she began her career in 2008, and which now sees her lead one of the most prestigious stage productions in the world.

This July, Nicole Savage returns to Australia for a nationwide audition tour, searching for the next generation of Moulin Rouge dancers. Successful candidates will join the Parisian troupe either in autumn or in spring 2027, following one month of intensive rehearsals in Paris.
The audition schedule is as follows: Perth on 5 July, Melbourne on 8 July, Sydney on 12 July, Brisbane on 16 July, Gold Coast on 19 July and Sydney again on 23 July. During the auditions, candidates will go through a series of elimination rounds in which they will be asked to demonstrate their command of a variety of dance styles. One of the key stages will, of course, be the French Cancan, the Moulin Rouge’s iconic dance since 1889.
Candidates must be professional dancers and meet the minimum height requirements of 1.75m for women and 1.85m for men.
One figure perfectly illustrates the special bond between Australia and the world’s most famous cabaret: among the 18 nationalities currently represented in the Moulin Rouge troupe, Australians make up the largest national group. A statistic that speaks to the exceptional talent of Australian dancers and their particular affinity for the French art of cabaret.
