En Europe, le 8 mai est un moment important. Au même titre que le 11 novembre, cette journée est généralement marquée par des défilés, des discours et des instants de recueillement dans les cimetières. En effet, le 8 mai est une date associée à la guerre. Et, plus précisément, à la Seconde Guerre Mondiale.
Le 8 mai, c’est la fin d’une guerre. Aussi appelé Victory in Europe Day, il s’agit du jour où la capitulation de l’Allemagne nazie face aux Alliés a été actée. L’Armistice a été signée à Reims, marquant l’issue – en Europe, et non en Asie – d’un conflit ayant fait près de 60 millions de victimes à travers le monde. La situation était devenue intenable pour les Allemands : ces derniers enchaînaient les défaites, et les armées alliées étaient parvenues près de Berlin. Quelques jours plus tôt, le 30 avril, Adolf Hitler s’était donné la mort dans son bunker de la capitale.
Comme le Führer était décédé, les Allemands devaient déposer les armes. Le choix du lieu de la reddition allemande avait cependant fait l’objet de débats. Staline voulait que la capitulation soit signée en territoire soviétique, afin d’entériner la supériorité de l’Union sur les puissances occidentales. Mais l’idée n’a pas été suivie par les États-Unis et la Grande-Bretagne, qui ont tenu à ce qu’elle ait lieu en France. Reims fut finalement choisie.
Le 7 mai 1945, une première capitulation fut signée à Reims, près de la fameuse cathédrale où tant de rois furent sacrés. Les États-Unis y étaient représentés par Dwight Eisenhower. Quelques années plus tard, il deviendra président des États-Unis.
Le lendemain, sur demande de Staline, une nouvelle capitulation fut signée à Berlin. La France y était également représentée par le maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny. C’est donc le 8 mai 1945, jour admis comme étant celui de l’Armistice, qu’eut lieu la reddition allemande à Berlin.
En Australie, malgré les quelques 40 000 pertes militaires et civiles causées par la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, le 8 mai n’est pas considéré comme une journée importante. Ce n’est pas un jour férié, comme c’est le cas en France. Ici, les commémorations associées à l’engagement militaire des Australiens ont lieu le 11 novembre ( Remembrance Day ) et le 25 avril ( Anzac Day ).
Cependant ! De nombreuses initiatives citoyennes réclament que l’Australia Day, fête nationale ayant actuellement lieu le 26 janvier de chaque année, soit décalée au 8 mai. Et pour cause : les défenseurs du projet pensent que choisir le 8 mai serait une belle façon de rendre hommage à l’identité australienne. Si l’on abrégeait le 8 mai, on obtiendrait « M8 », ce qui ressemblait beaucoup à… « mate », l’expression favorite des Australiens !

In Europe, the 8th of May is day of commemorations. This day, as well as the 11th of November, is generally celebrated through military parades, formal speeches and other acts of remembrance. Indeed, the 8th of May is associated with war. And more precisely, to the Second World War.
WWII war has ended on the 8th of May. Its alternative name this day is the Victory in Europe Day, and it designates the official surrender of the Nazi Germany in front of allied forces. The armistice has been signed in Reims, and it has marked the end of the hostilities in Europe. However, the war was still going on in Asia. The Germans had no alternative than surrendering, since they were losing ground in their own country. Furthermore, on the 30th of April, they had learnt the suicide of Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Reich.
As the Führer was dead, it was obvious that the Nazis were defeated. But where were they supposed to conclude the armistice ? On the side of the winners, the question was a matter of concern. Staline wanted the German capitulation to be signed in the soviet territory, in order to confirm the domination of the USSR in Europe. The idea has not been approved by the other allies, who were willing to sign the armistice in France. The French city of Reims has eventually been chosen.
On the 7th of May, around 3 A.M., the Nazi general Alfred Jodl was signing the unconditional surrender of the Reich. The event had taken place in a building which is nowadays known as the Roosevelt High School, in memory of the former U.S. President. The official end of the conflict was fixed for the day after, in the presence of Dwight Eisenhower.
On the 8th of May, a second surrender has been signed in Berlin in order to please Staline. France was represented by the Marshal de Lattre de Tassigny. Therefore the 8th of the May is the date of the German capitulation in Berlin. However, as the news only arrived in Moscow moments after midnight, the day celebrated in Russia is the 9th of May.
In Australia, despite the 40.000 civilian and military losses which have occured during the WWII, the 8th of May is not considered as an important day. Unlike Paris, Canberra did not instituted public holidays to commemorate the Victory Day. Here the days of remembrance are the 11th of November ( end of WWI ) and the 25th of April ( Anzac Day ).
However ! Numerous initiatives support a reprogramming of Australia Day, as the current date is controversial. The 8th of May is one of the options. The partisans of that idea argue that choosing the 8th of May would be a nice way to pay tribute to the Australian shared identity. The abbreviation of the date is « M8 », a small world which looks like… « mate », the iconic expression of the Aussies !
