Australia confirms its place among the world’s leading academic powers in the latest international university rankings, but faces growing competition, particularly from Asian universities advancing at a sustained pace.

In the QS World University Rankings 2026, which assessed more than 1,500 institutions around the world, the University of Melbourne ranked 19th globally. While it slipped six places from its 13th position in 2025, its overall score nonetheless rose 1.9 points to 90.8, driven by improvements across seven of the nine ranking indicators. It earned a near-perfect score of 99.7 for academic reputation, the highest in Australia.

The University of New South Wales ranked just behind in 20th place globally, maintaining its presence in the top 20 for the third consecutive year. The University of Sydney came in 25th, ANU 32nd, Monash 36th and the University of Queensland 42nd, while the University of Western Australia (77th), the University of Adelaide (82nd), UTS (96th) and Macquarie University (100th) complete the group of Australian universities in the global top 100.

In the QS 2026 rankings by subject, 37 Australian institutions appear a total of 926 times across all categories. Australia features in the global top 100 across 54 different subject areas, and eleven Australian universities rank in the global top 10 across seven disciplines, including pharmacy, sports-related subjects, engineering, philosophy, archaeology and anthropology.

The shadow over the results is nonetheless significant. More than 60 per cent of Australian and New Zealand universities fell in the rankings this year. Asian competition is intensifying: 44 per cent of Chinese universities improved their QS ranking, compared to just 19 per cent of Australian universities.

In the Times Higher Education Rankings 2026, six Australian universities feature in the global top 100 and ten in the top 200, with the University of Melbourne leading the national rankings for more than a decade. For francophone students considering pursuing their studies in Australia, these results confirm the international value of an Australian degree, in a country that hosts the third largest international student population in the world.
