Scottish rowing brothers aim for record-breaking Pacific crossing

Trois frères écossais se sont lancés dans un périple gigantesque depuis le Pérou dans l’espoir d’établir un record de traversée de l’océan Pacifique à la rame.

Ewan, Jamie et Lachlan MacLean sont partis de Lima à bord d’un canot pneumatique en fibre de carbone, avec pour objectif d’atteindre Sydney, en Australie, à 9 000 miles (14 500 kilomètres) de distance, en quatre mois environ.

Le trio d’Édimbourg, qui a déjà traversé l’océan Atlantique à la rame, espère récolter plus d’un million de dollars pour des projets d’approvisionnement en eau potable à Madagascar.

“Nous allons ramer sans arrêt et sans soutien extérieur, nous serons donc seuls”, a déclaré Lachlan MacLean à l’AFP avant d’embarquer.

Ils sont partis peu après 16h00 (21h GMT) samedi, après une brève cérémonie au cours de laquelle leur frère cadet Jamie a joué de la cornemuse, accompagné par l’orchestre de la marine péruvienne.

“L’un des vrais défis est le manque de sommeil. Vous ramez jour et nuit, sans arrêt, et vous vous relayez”, explique Ewan, le frère aîné. “C’est absolument incessant”.

Les frères prévoient de dormir cinq à six heures toutes les 24 heures et de ramer 12 à 14 heures par jour pendant 120 à 150 jours.

“Ce projet a pour but de collecter des fonds pour des projets d’eau potable à Madagascar” par l’intermédiaire de leur organisation caritative, la Fondation MacLean, a expliqué Lachlan.

“L’eau propre est le besoin humain le plus fondamental de la planète, mais 10 % des personnes dans le monde n’y ont pas accès”, ont-ils déclaré sur leur site web.

Seuls 14% de la population rurale de Madagascar ont accès à une source d’eau propre.

“La conservation des océans et le maintien de la propreté des océans font partie de la même parcelle”, a déclaré Lachlan.

Les frères ont battu trois records du monde en traversant l’océan Atlantique en 2020, sans jamais avoir pratiqué l’aviron de manière professionnelle, et ont récolté plus de 260 000 dollars pour des œuvres de bienfaisance.
